4 months agoPinang is a perfect island paradise, ideal for those looking to disconnect from the ordinary and to rediscover themselves. This was my second visit here, this time bringing my yoga retreat group with me for 10 nights. Sleeping literally metres from the ocean, it has a raw connection with nature that I've never experienced before. Wildlife, the weather, the magical sound of coral tinkling in the surf make this such a unique experience. Sure, it's not for the faint of heart - travel to the island is long, and you need to come prepared for island living, but what you get in return is so very worth it. We were expertly looked after by a skilled team and nothing was too much trouble. The food, the ambiance, the scenery - I couldn't have asked for more and this retreat was one of my best yet. Pinang is an extraordinary place.

6 months agoThe only reason this isn’t getting a 1 star is because the beautiful staff on Pinang and the food. I am 1 of a group of 10 that think the same along these lines. Surf was excellent but could reach those breaks with many other businesses. Positives of Pinang - beautiful island during the day - staff are incredible and welcoming Negatives - very little warning week out about mosquitoes. The island is absolutely riddled with them as soon as that sun goes away. We find out the last day they had a fumigation gun and never once used this knowing how uncomfortable we were. First night 8 of us woke up covered! I had 60+ Bites all over me. - blood on every single sheet we slept on the first night and the mosquito nets - having to smother yourself in repellent every single night prior to dinner and bed - Boat the main source for our surf trip broke down 1-1.5hrs daily delaying everything. Last day it didn’t work at all. We were compensated for this which was expected considering the money you spend for 10 days. - The manager hangs around in the hut all day every day. 3 were non surfers and they at times felt uncomfortable from the lack of socialisation. Watching YouTube and not ever offering any sort of suggestion for them to do. - coconuts are charged lol nothing substantial but it’s the principle. - snacks are marked up like 500-1000% - beers are 100,000 IDR each and when we wanted to get our own it was made a “big deal” - Rats chew your belongings something that wasn’t mentioned at all - zero privacy in one hut which seems to be an effort to just put a sheet up for the girls To get changed etc - power goes off frequently which is expected being so remote. Water goes off too or doesn’t work properly. End two bungalows have showers which are pointless as they don’t work even when water is going. It’s a shame really the reviews here mentioned nothing of such along the lines of the above like mosquito. Was very sad how we couldn’t wait to get off the island. The mosquitoes were by far the worse we have ever seen around Indonesia. Whether they are paid for or fake reviews we want to highlight our truthful experience. We would never go back and the complaints we heard from other camps make a lot of sense now about Pinang. Expensive and there for as much profit as possible. Will never return to this island. Also most of the island is swamp land too.
